Step One: Start With a Harvest Goal, Not a Seed Count
Instead of asking "how many seeds should I buy," start with "how much do I want to harvest." Say you want 40 pounds of tomatoes for the season for fresh eating and canning. That target drives everything downstream, rather than guessing a plant count first and hoping it's enough.
Step Two: Convert Harvest Goal to Plant Count
Divide your harvest goal by expected yield per plant. A well-grown indeterminate tomato plant typically yields 8 to 12 pounds over a season; use 10 pounds as a working average. 40 pounds divided by 10 pounds per plant equals 4 plants needed. This is the single most important number in the whole calculator, and it's just division.
Step Three: Apply the Germination Rate
You don't sow exactly 4 seeds for 4 plants, because not every seed germinates. If your seed is rated at 85 percent germination, seeds needed equals plants needed divided by germination rate: 4 divided by 0.85 equals 4.7, round up to 5 seeds.

Germination rate covers seeds that never sprout, but it doesn't cover seedlings lost afterward to damping-off, transplant shock, or a hungry slug. A standard buffer is 15 to 20 percent on top of the germination-adjusted number. Take the 4.7 seeds from step three, multiply by 1.15 for a conservative 15 percent buffer: 4.7 times 1.15 equals 5.4, so sow 6 seeds total for a 4-plant goal. That's 50 percent more seeds than the raw plant target, which sounds like a lot until you remember seeds cost cents and a missed harvest goal costs an entire season.
Step Five: Convert Plant Count to Row Feet
Once you know you need 4 mature tomato plants, spaced at 24 inches (2 feet) apart in-row, you need 4 multiplied by 2 feet, or 8 feet of row, plus a bit of buffer at each end. This is the step that turns an abstract seed calculation into an actual bed layout you can measure with a tape measure.
Applying the Same Formula to a Different Crop
Say your goal is 15 pounds of bush beans. Average yield per bush bean plant is about 0.5 pounds over a season, so 15 divided by 0.5 equals 30 plants needed. At 90 percent germination, seeds needed is 30 divided by 0.9, equals 33.3, times a 10 percent loss buffer (beans establish more reliably than tomatoes), equals 36.7, so sow 37 seeds. At 4-inch in-row spacing, 37 plants need roughly 12.3 feet of row, or about two 6-foot rows.
Why Building It Yourself Matters
Once you understand the four multipliers — harvest goal, yield per plant, germination rate, and loss buffer — you can adjust any single one without recalculating from scratch. If a seed swap gives you fresher seed with a 95 percent germination rate instead of 85 percent, you immediately know your seed count drops, without needing to rerun an entire spreadsheet.
