Does Seed Depth Really Matter? The Numbers Say Yes

Seed packets print a depth number, usually something like "plant one quarter inch deep" or "cover lightly with soil." Most gardeners follow it without asking where the number came from. It comes from a ratio, not a guess: seed depth should equal roughly 2 to 4 times the seed's own diameter. Once you know that ratio, you can work out planting depth for a seed you've never grown before, using nothing but a ruler.
Where the 2-4x Rule Comes From
A seed carries a fixed store of energy in its cotyledons. That energy powers the seedling until its first true leaves emerge and start photosynthesizing. Push the seed deeper than 4 times its diameter and the stored energy often runs out before the shoot breaks the surface — the seedling dies underground, a failure you never see and can't diagnose. Plant it shallower than 2 times its diameter and the seed sits in a thin layer of soil that dries out between waterings, or gets displaced by rain and birds before it germinates.
Worked example: a squash seed measures about 12 millimeters (roughly half an inch) along its longest axis. Multiply by 2 and 4: your planting depth range is 24 to 48 millimeters, or about 1 to 2 inches. That matches what seed packets print for squash, which confirms the rule rather than replacing it.
Small Seeds Need a Different Approach
Lettuce, carrot, and petunia seeds are under 1.5 millimeters across. Run the same formula: 2 to 4 times 1.5 millimeters is 3 to 6 millimeters, roughly a quarter inch at most, and often the honest answer is "barely cover it." Many small seeds actually germinate best pressed onto the soil surface with only a dusting on top, because they need light to trigger germination. Depth math still applies — it just produces a number close to zero.
The Dust-and-Press Method
For seeds smaller than 2 millimeters, skip measuring altogether and use the "dust and press" method — scatter seeds, press firmly into the soil with a flat board, then add a fine layer of vermiculite or sifted compost less than a quarter inch thick.
Big Seeds and the Energy Reserve Advantage
Beans, corn, and squash carry large energy reserves, which is exactly why they tolerate deeper planting. A pole bean seed at 10 millimeters diameter plants comfortably at 20 to 40 millimeters (0.8 to 1.6 inches). Corn kernels, around 8 millimeters, plant at 16 to 32 millimeters (roughly 1 to 1.25 inches) — deep enough to stay moist through a dry spell, shallow enough that the shoot doesn't exhaust its reserves reaching daylight.
Adjusting for Soil Type
The 2-4x range isn't arbitrary slack — it's a dial you turn based on your soil. In sandy soil, moisture evaporates fast near the surface, so plant toward the deep end of the range (closer to 4x) to keep the seed in contact with consistent moisture. In heavy clay, the surface stays wetter longer but clay crusts hard when it dries, which can trap a shoot trying to push through; plant toward the shallow end (closer to 2x) so the emerging seedling has less crust to break through.

Plant a bean seed a quarter inch deep — well under the 2x minimum of roughly 0.8 inches — and it often germinates fine but tips over or gets kicked out of the soil by the first hard rain, because there wasn't enough soil mass to anchor the root. Plant a lettuce seed an inch deep — wildly past its 4x maximum of about 6 millimeters — and it may never emerge at all, since lettuce also needs light exposure to break dormancy and an inch of soil blocks that signal completely.
