Reading a Spacing Number Correctly

"Space 18 inches apart" refers to the distance between the centers of two mature plants, sized so their canopies just touch or slightly overlap at full growth. It has nothing to do with how far apart the seeds or seedlings look when first planted. Planting tomato seedlings 8 inches apart because that's how much space the young plants seem to need ignores that they'll eventually need 24 to 36 inches once fully grown and fighting each other for light will already have set back your yield weeks before you notice.

Leafy greens like lettuce and spinach: 6 to 10 inches. Bush beans: 4 to 6 inches in-row, 18 inches between rows. Pole beans: 6 inches in-row, 30 to 36 inches between rows for the trellis. Carrots and radishes: 2 to 3 inches. Beets: 3 to 4 inches. Broccoli and cabbage: 15 to 18 inches. Peppers: 14 to 18 inches. Broccoli at 18-inch spacing occupies 1.5 feet times 1.5 feet, or 2.25 square feet per plant. 32 divided by 2.25 equals 14.2, so the bed holds 14 broccoli plants. Compare that to carrots at 3-inch spacing: 0.25 feet times 0.25 feet equals 0.0625 square feet per plant, and 32 divided by 0.0625 equals 512 carrots in the same footprint.

Row Spacing vs. In-Row Spacing

Row spacing (the gap between rows) and in-row spacing (the gap within a row) solve different problems. Row spacing is mostly about airflow and access for weeding or harvesting; tightening it too much invites fungal disease from poor air circulation. In-row spacing is about direct competition for light and root space between neighboring plants of the same row. A common mistake is tightening row spacing to fit more plants while leaving in-row spacing generous, when the reverse usually preserves yield better, since airflow problems tend to hurt an entire bed while a few tightly spaced plants in a row only affect each other.

Intensive vs. Traditional Layouts

Traditional row gardening, designed for tractor and hoe access, wastes a lot of space on wide row gaps — often 30 to 36 inches between rows regardless of crop size. Intensive square-foot-style planting drops row spacing down to the plant's actual light-competition radius, often 12 to 18 inches, since hand access replaces equipment access. This shift alone can raise plant counts 30 to 50 percent on identical square footage. When the Packet Gives a Range
