Bush Bean Spacing: The Numbers That Maximize Yield

Bush beans have a reputation for being forgiving, and mostly they are, but spacing is where that forgiveness runs out fastest. Plant them too tight and you'll get more pods per square foot on paper while each individual plant underperforms and disease risk climbs. Here's what the numbers actually say.

How Much Room Bush Beans Need

Bush beans are typically spaced 3 to 4 inches apart within a row, with rows themselves set 18 to 24 inches apart. In a 4-foot by 8-foot raised bed (32 square feet), using 4-inch in-row spacing and 18-inch rows gives you roughly 6 rows across the 4-foot width (with edge buffer) and about 10 to 11 plants per 8-foot row, for a total in the range of 60 to 65 plants per bed.

What Happens When You Go Tighter

Drop in-row spacing from 4 inches to 2 inches and you roughly double the plant count in the same row length, from about 24 plants in an 8-foot row to around 48. That sounds like a clear win until you look at yield per plant: multiple bean-spacing trials show per-plant pod count dropping by 25 to 30 percent under crowded conditions, as plants compete harder for light and root space. Net yield per square foot at 2-inch spacing often ends up only 10 to 15 percent higher than at 4-inch spacing, not the 100 percent increase the plant count alone would suggest, while using nearly twice the seed.

Why Row Spacing Matters More Than It Looks

Row spacing affects disease risk more directly than in-row spacing does, because it controls how much air moves between the leafy canopy of one row and the next. Rows spaced at 24 inches maintain airflow that keeps leaf-surface humidity low enough to slow bean rust and white mold development. Drop that to 15 inches or less, and the canopy from adjacent rows starts overlapping by the time plants reach full size (bush beans typically spread 12 to 18 inches wide), trapping humid air between rows and measurably raising fungal disease incidence in wet climates or humid summers.

Sowing Enough Seed to Hit Your Target Count

Bush bean germination rates typically run 75 to 85 percent for fresh seed. If your 32-square-foot bed needs 62 plants at your chosen spacing, and you're working with an 80 percent germination rate, you'd want to sow 62 divided by 0.8, or about 78 seeds, planting slightly more per hole than the final count to allow for thinning rather than gaps. Direct-sowing 2 seeds per hole at your target spacing and thinning to 1 is usually simpler than trying to hit an exact seed count on the first pass.

Keeping the Harvest Going With Succession Spacing

Bush beans produce a concentrated harvest window of about 2 to 3 weeks rather than a long trickle, which makes succession planting a spacing question as much as a timing one. Sowing a new section every 12 to 14 days, using a quarter to a third of your bean bed each time, keeps fresh plants coming into production as older ones taper off. For a 32-square-foot bed split into four 8-square-foot sections, that's roughly 15 to 16 plants per section at standard spacing, planted on a rotating two-week cycle from mid-spring through roughly 10 weeks before first fall frost.
