Most gardeners think of succession planting as "plant more seeds every few weeks." That's true, but it skips the part that actually determines how much food you get: the arithmetic of fitting multiple plantings into a bed that only has so many days in it before frost. Once you know a crop's days-to-maturity and your bed's growing window, the number of successions you can run is just division. The spacing decisions that follow are smaller adjustments on top of that.
Start With the Growing Window, Not the Seed Packet
Count the days between your last spring frost and first fall frost. Say that's 150 days. If you're growing bush beans at 55 days to maturity, you don't get 150 divided by 55 equals 2.7 successions automatically — you need to subtract the days each crop actually occupies the bed, including a short harvest tail, say 10 days of picking. That's 65 days per cycle. 150 divided by 65 equals 2.3, so plan for 2 full successions with slack left over, not 3.
The Staggering Formula
Instead of planting the whole crop's successions back to back, stagger sowings by roughly one-quarter of the days-to-maturity. For a 55-day bean, that's about 14 days between sowings. Sowing every 14 days keeps a rolling harvest rather than one big glut followed by a gap. Do the math backward from your last frost: if your last possible sowing date is 55 days before first frost, and you want 3 staggered sowings, you need 3 times 14 equals 42 days of sowing window before that cutoff, so your first sowing has to start 42 days earlier than the final one.
How Spacing Changes Mid-Season
Standard bean spacing is 4 inches within the row and 18 inches between rows. In a succession scheme, growers often tighten in-row spacing to 3 inches for late-summer sowings because shorter day length means smaller mature plants. Tightening from 4 inches to 3 inches raises plant count per 10-foot row from 30 plants (120 inches divided by 4) to 40 plants (120 inches divided by 3) — a 33 percent increase. That only pays off if per-plant yield doesn't drop by more than that percentage, which for short-season fall beans it usually doesn't.

If you're following spring lettuce (50 days) with summer beans (55 days) in the same 4-by-8 bed, add both maturity windows plus a 7-day turnover buffer for clearing and amending soil: 50 plus 55 plus 7 equals 112 days. Check that against your frost-free window. With a 180-day season, 112 days leaves 68 days spare — enough for a third quick crop like a 30-day radish planted right after the lettuce comes out, before the beans even go in.
A Worked Example: Carrots Into a 4-by-8 Bed
Carrots run about 70 days to maturity with a 3-inch in-row spacing and 12-inch row spacing. An 8-foot row at 3-inch spacing holds 32 plants (96 inches divided by 3). Across four rows spaced 12 inches apart in a 4-foot-wide bed, that's 128 carrots per planting. With a 150-day window and a 10-day turnover buffer between plantings, each cycle costs 80 days, so 150 divided by 80 rounds down to one full succession with room for a fast 25-day radish crop tucked in afterward.
When Tighter Spacing Backfires
Succession crops sown in mid-summer heat often bolt or stress faster, so cramming them tighter than spring spacing can cut yield per plant by 20 to 40 percent, more than offsetting the extra plant count. As a rule of thumb, don't tighten spacing more than 25 percent from the spring recommendation, and only do it for crops harvested young, like baby greens or scallions, where full mature size isn't the goal anyway.

Work the calendar first using days-to-maturity plus turnover buffer, then adjust in-row spacing only within a 25 percent margin.
