Wider Spacing for Drought: How Much Extra Room to Give
The short version: adding 20 to 30 percent to your seed packet's standard spacing in a dry climate cuts root competition for water without redesigning your whole layout — a 12-inch spacing becomes roughly 14.5 to 15.5 inches under the adjustment.
Seed packet spacing numbers are usually calibrated for average rainfall and irrigation. In a dry-summer climate, or if you're gardening without reliable irrigation, that standard spacing packs roots closer together than the available soil moisture can support. The fix is a straightforward percentage adjustment, not a redesign.
Why Spacing and Water Availability Are Linked
Every plant's root system draws water from a roughly circular zone in the soil. Standard spacing assumes those zones will overlap somewhat, because irrigation or rain keeps replenishing the shared soil. In drought conditions, that overlap becomes competition — two plants pulling from the same shrinking pool of moisture, both losing. Increasing spacing shrinks the overlap and gives each plant a larger, more exclusive share of available water.
The 20 to 30 Percent Rule
For most vegetables in a dry-summer or drought-prone climate, add 20 to 30 percent to the seed packet's standard spacing. Worked example: a packet recommends 12-inch spacing for peppers. Twenty percent more is 12 times 1.2, or 14.4 inches. Thirty percent more is 12 times 1.3, or 15.6 inches. Round to a practical number and space peppers 15 inches apart instead of 12.
Second example: bush beans normally space at 4 inches within the row. A 25 percent increase (a reasonable middle value) gives 4 times 1.25, or 5 inches. That's a small-looking change per plant, but across a 10-foot row it changes your plant count from roughly 30 plants down to 24 — fewer plants, each drawing from more soil.
Adjusting the Percentage by Root Depth
Shallow-rooted crops like lettuce and most herbs draw water from the top 6-12 inches of soil, where moisture depletes fastest in dry weather but also where overlap is limited by the plant's small root spread. A 15-20 percent increase is usually enough. Deep-rooted crops like tomatoes, squash, and melons send roots down 24-36 inches or more, and their root zones spread wider underground than their canopy suggests above ground — these benefit from the full 25-30 percent increase, sometimes more in genuinely arid regions.
What You Gain and Lose
Wider spacing means fewer total plants in a given bed. A 4-foot by 8-foot bed that fit 32 pepper plants at 12-inch standard spacing fits about 24 at 15-inch drought spacing — a 25 percent drop in plant count. But each remaining plant, freed from root competition, typically produces measurably more per plant in dry conditions, since it isn't stunted by competing for the same shrinking water supply. Total yield often ends up close to even, sometimes higher, because the reduction in per-plant stress outweighs the lower plant count.

Wider spacing has a side benefit worth quantifying: more room between plants means more exposed soil surface, which you can now mulch effectively without smothering foliage. A 2 to 3 inch mulch layer cuts surface evaporation by roughly 25 to 50 percent depending on material and climate. Combine the spacing increase with mulch and you're often reducing total garden water demand by close to a third compared to tightly spaced, unmulched beds.
When Not to Widen Spacing
If you're running reliable drip irrigation that delivers a fixed amount of water directly to each plant's root zone regardless of neighbors, the drought spacing adjustment matters less — the competition the rule solves for is largely engineered away by targeted delivery. The adjustment earns its keep most in gardens relying on hand watering, overhead sprinklers, or rainfall alone, where water availability really is a shared, limited resource across the bed.
