The Plant Spacing Formula Behind Every Seed Packet
Flip over almost any vegetable seed packet and you'll find something like "rows 24 inches apart, plants 12 inches apart in the row." Why two different numbers, and does it actually matter which is which? They're the entire spacing formula the seed company's agronomists worked out through actual trial data, and understanding what each one does lets you apply it correctly — or adapt it intelligently for a different layout.
What Is Row Spacing For?
Row spacing is the distance between parallel rows of the same crop, and it's usually wider than in-row spacing because it needs to accommodate airflow, sunlight reaching lower leaves, and physical access for weeding or harvesting. Tomatoes at 24 to 36 inches between rows aren't spaced that wide because the plant's roots need that much horizontal room — they're spaced that wide so a person and a hose can get between them and so foliage doesn't create a solid wall blocking light and airflow.
What In-Row Spacing Is For
In-row spacing is the distance between plants within the same row, and it's driven almost entirely by root competition and canopy size at maturity. Carrots at 3 inches in-row reflects how much root volume one carrot needs underground, not any airflow consideration, since carrot foliage barely touches its neighbor even at that tight spacing.
The Area-Per-Plant Calculation
Multiply row spacing by in-row spacing and you get the square footage each plant effectively controls in a traditional row layout. Tomatoes at 36-inch rows and 24-inch in-row spacing occupy 3 feet times 2 feet, or 6 square feet per plant. Bush beans at 18-inch rows and 4-inch in-row spacing occupy 1.5 feet times 0.33 feet, about half a square foot per plant — which is why a modest bed can hold dozens of bean plants but only a handful of tomatoes.

Square-foot and offset-grid planting methods drop the row/in-row distinction in favor of one uniform spacing number in all directions, since there's no walking path between rows to preserve — every direction is equally "in-row." A crop rated 12 inches row by 12 inches in-row becomes simply "12-inch spacing" on a grid, and the area-per-plant calculation becomes spacing times spacing, or 1 square foot in this case, rather than the row-times-in-row multiplication used for traditional layouts.
A Worked Comparison
Take peppers, commonly listed at 24-inch rows and 18-inch in-row spacing in traditional layout — 3 square feet per plant, or about 10 plants in a 32-square-foot bed. Convert to an offset grid using the tighter 18-inch dimension applied uniformly: 32 divided by 1.5 squared, or 32 divided by 2.25, gives about 14 plants — roughly 40 percent more peppers in the same bed, simply by applying the tighter of the two packet numbers uniformly instead of preserving a row-access gap that raised beds don't require.
When to Keep the Wider Spacing Anyway
Not every crop benefits from collapsing to the tighter number. Crops prone to fungal disease in humid climates — squash, cucumbers, some tomato varieties — genuinely need the airflow that wider row spacing provides, and packing them onto a tight grid can increase disease pressure enough to erase any yield gain from the extra plants. Check whether your packet's wide row spacing is there for airflow reasons or purely for foot-traffic access before deciding to tighten it.

The short answer: the two numbers on a seed packet aren't redundant or arbitrary — one manages airflow and access, the other manages root competition. Knowing which is which lets you use both numbers correctly in a traditional row garden, or intelligently collapse them into one tighter number when you're working in a raised bed that doesn't need a walking path between every row.
