Splitting a 1.5-inch weekly target into 7 daily waterings of about 0.2 inches each sounds thorough, but it keeps only the top inch or two of soil moist, which trains roots to stay shallow and makes plants more vulnerable to heat stress. Delivering the same 1.5 inches in 2 sessions of 0.75 inches each, 3 to 4 days apart, lets water penetrate 6 to 8 inches deep, encouraging roots to follow it down. The total volume is identical; the distribution changes root architecture.
Containers Need a Different Ratio Entirely
A 5-gallon container has a much smaller soil reservoir relative to its plant's leaf area than an in-ground bed, so it can lose moisture 2 to 3 times faster on a hot day. Where an in-ground tomato might need 1.5 inches weekly, the same variety in a container often needs the equivalent of 3 to 4.5 inches weekly, frequently meaning a daily watering check rather than a twice-a-week one. Don't apply in-ground ratios to pots without adjusting.
