Grid Spacing for Raised Beds, Explained

The short version: a raised bed's grid size comes from dividing the bed's dimensions by a crop's required spacing — the same 4x8 bed can hold 32 plants or 512, depending entirely on which crop's cell size you're using.

The square-foot-gardening method popularized grid planting, but the underlying math works for any bed size, not just 12-by-12-inch squares. The idea is simple: divide your bed into equal cells sized to match a crop's spacing requirement, then put one plant (or a set number of seeds) in each cell. Once you know the formula, you can build a grid for a 2x4 bed, a 4x8 bed, or an oddly-shaped 6x10 bed just as easily.

The Core Grid Formula

Start with the plant's required spacing — say a seed packet says "space 6 inches apart." That 6 inches becomes your cell width and height. The number of cells across a bed is:

Cells across = bed width (inches) ÷ cell size (inches)

For a 48-inch-wide bed on a 6-inch grid: 48 ÷ 6 = 8 cells across. Do the same for length, then multiply the two counts together for total cells. An 8-foot (96-inch) long bed gives 96 ÷ 6 = 16 cells lengthwise, so 8 × 16 = 128 total cells, each holding one plant.

Comparing Grid Sizes on the Same Bed

The grid size changes dramatically with spacing requirements. Take that same 4x8 (48-by-96-inch) bed:

  • 12-inch grid (like bush beans or peppers): 4 × 8 = 32 cells.
  • 9-inch grid (like Swiss chard): roughly 5 × 10 = 50 cells (with some rounding at the edges).
  • 6-inch grid (like carrots or radishes): 8 × 16 = 128 cells.
  • 3-inch grid (like green onions): 16 × 32 = 512 cells.

That's a 16-fold difference in plant count between the widest and tightest spacing on the exact same footprint — which is why "how many plants fit in my bed" always needs a specific crop attached to it.

Handling Beds That Don't Divide Evenly

Real beds rarely divide perfectly into whole cells. A 30-inch-wide bed on an 8-inch grid gives 30 ÷ 8 = 3.75 cells — meaning you fit 3 full cells with 6 inches left over. The right move is to round down to 3 cells, then either widen each cell slightly (10 inches instead of 8, still above the crop's minimum) to use the space evenly, or leave the leftover strip as a path or edge buffer. Never round up and squeeze a partial cell in; that's how "the plan said 4 plants would fit" turns into stunted, competing plants in the field.

Mixed-Crop Grids: Zoning the Bed

When one bed holds several crops, don't try to force a single grid size across the whole thing. Instead, split the bed into rectangular zones first, then grid each zone independently. In a 4x8 bed, you might assign a 4x3-foot zone to 12-inch-spaced peppers (4 plants) and the remaining 4x5-foot zone to 6-inch-spaced carrots (8 × 10 = 80 plants, using the same divide-by-cell-size formula on the zone's own dimensions). Treat each zone as its own mini-bed for grid purposes and the math stays simple even as the planting gets more complex.

Grid Spacing vs. Row Spacing: When to Use Which

Grid spacing assumes a plant needs roughly equal clearance on all sides, which fits compact crops like lettuce, beets, and bush beans well. Vining or sprawling crops (squash, cucumbers on a trellis, indeterminate tomatoes) often need more space in one direction than the other, so a true grid overstates how many plants fit. For those, use rectangular cells instead of square ones — for example, 18 inches between plants in-row but 36 inches between rows for vining squash, which still uses the same divide-by-cell-size logic, just with two different cell dimensions.
