Drought-proofing means running this math in spring, before you need it, so you know your garden's real weekly demand and can compare it honestly against what your rain barrels, well, or municipal allowance can actually deliver.
Calculating Your Garden's Water Budget
The basic formula: total garden square footage times average water need per square foot per week equals your weekly budget in gallons. Most vegetable gardens need the equivalent of 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. One inch of water over 1 square foot equals about 0.62 gallons. So for a 200 square foot vegetable garden at 1 inch per week: 200 times 0.62, or 124 gallons weekly. At 1.5 inches in peak summer heat: 200 times 0.93, or 186 gallons weekly.
That's your baseline number. Before the dry season, write it down and compare it to what your water source can realistically supply over the same week.
Comparing Budget to Supply
A standard 55-gallon rain barrel, even full, covers less than half a week of a 200 square foot garden's peak demand on its own. If you're relying partly or fully on stored rainwater, multiply your barrel count by 55 gallons and compare directly to your weekly budget. Three rain barrels give you 165 gallons — close to covering a 186-gallon peak week, but not quite, meaning you need either a fourth barrel, supplemental tap water, or a plan to reduce demand.
Cutting the Budget Without Cutting Plants
Three changes reliably reduce total water need without shrinking your garden. Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep cuts evaporation by roughly 25 to 50 percent, which on our 186-gallon example saves 45 to 90 gallons weekly. Shade cloth over the hottest afternoon hours reduces soil surface temperature and can cut water need by another 10 to 20 percent. Grouping high-water plants (squash, cucumbers) together and low-water plants (herbs, many root vegetables) together lets you water zones differently instead of running everything on one schedule sized for the thirstiest plant.
Combined, these three changes can realistically cut a garden's water budget by 30 to 40 percent — turning that 186-gallon peak week into something closer to 115-130 gallons, which three rain barrels can cover with room to spare.

Even with a solid budget, a genuine drought can push demand past supply. Decide your priority order before that happens, not during it. Fruiting crops mid-harvest (tomatoes, peppers, squash) suffer the most from inconsistent water and should get first priority. Established perennials and trees have deeper root systems and can typically go longer between waterings. Anything you were planning to pull soon anyway is the easiest place to cut water first.
Soil as a Water Reservoir
Soil organic matter functions as a buffer in your water budget math, not just a soil-health talking point. Each 1 percent increase in soil organic matter allows the soil to hold roughly an additional 20,000 gallons of water per acre, or scaled down, about 0.46 gallons per 100 square feet. For a 200 square foot bed, raising organic matter by 2 percent (a realistic goal over a couple seasons of compost additions) adds close to 2 gallons of extra water-holding capacity — not huge on its own, but it stacks with mulch and shade to meaningfully stretch your supply between waterings.
